Dirty Shirley

This is somehow both my saddest and most viral painting. Inspired by an unfortunately ordinary experience of being sexualized, Dirty Shirley started with a moment at the post office that left me thinking about just how normalized these experiences have become for women.
A Shirley Temple is sweet, innocent, and a little girlish. Then adults got their hands on it, added liquor, and made it dirty. I couldn't stop thinking about how much that mirrors the ways innocence can be taken from us, sometimes long before we're ready to lose it.
Painted along the sides of the original canvas are the words, “She was never meant to be this strong.” It's a double entendre about the liquor that makes the drink stronger, but also the things that force women to become strong in the first place. Because maybe the problem isn't that women are too strong. Maybe it's that so many of us were never given the chance not to be.
